‘Abraham Darby’ is a versatile English shrub rose with an arching growth habit, reaching heights of 5 feet and widths of 5 feet. Its large, cupped blooms showcase a blend of apricot and pink hues, emitting a strong, fruity fragrance reminiscent of citrus. The foliage is glossy and dark green, complementing the rose’s vibrant blossoms. While generally robust, ‘Abraham Darby’ may be susceptible to rust in certain climates. Its vigorous growth and substantial size make it suitable for larger garden spaces, where it can be trained as a climber or left to flourish as a shrub. This rose’s combination of beauty and fragrance makes it a standout choice for gardeners seeking a classic, old-fashioned bloom.

In my Top 3 for scent, Darby only fails in blackspot resistance. Vigorous and free-flowering, and does well in a (very) big pot.
I tried 3 times to grow this beautiful rose with delicious fragrance. Zone 5b Maine; Hardiness was barely ok, black spot is terrible. I tried it in several different spots in the garden for the best sun, and soil was good in all of them. I gave up years ago, and won’t try again in my no-spray garden. Our climate might be 5b, but the growing season is short, the winter is freeze thaw nowadays. Oh well.
I am in Zone 5b and my Abraham Darby gets black spot too but it doesn’t stop her rewarding me beautiful blooms. As an early variety, the disease resistance is not that good but I will always keep her for the beautiful blooms and the charming fragrance.
Blackspot like many of my Austin roses. Kordes roses much better with little or no blackspot. 3rd try for Abraham Darby since it is such a beautiful rose
